Hemodynamic change in occipital lobe during visual search: visual attention allocation measured with NIRS.

چکیده
We examined the changes in regional cerebral blood volume (rCBV) around visual cortex using Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) when observers attended to visual scenes. The oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin (Oxy-Hb and Deoxy-Hb) concentration changes at occipital lobe were monitored during a dual task. Observers were asked to name a digit superimposed on a scenery picture, while in parallel, they had to detect an on-and-off flickering object in a Change Blindness paradigm. Results showed the typical activation patterns in and around the visual cortex with increases in Oxy-Hb and decreases in Deoxy-Hb. The Oxy-Hb increase doubled when observers could not find the target, as opposed to trials in which they could. The results strongly suggest that active attention to a visual scene enhances Oxy-Hb change much stronger than passive watching, and that attention and Oxy-Hb increases are possibly correlated.

Near-infrared spectroscopy of the visual cortex in unilateral optic neuritis.
PURPOSE To examine the occipital-lobe activation of patients with optic neuritis using near-infrared spectroscopy. DESIGN Experimental study. METHODS NIRS was performed on five patients with acute unilateral optic neuritis during monocular visual stimulation. As controls, six normal subjects were also tested in the same manner. RESULTS In the patients with optic neuritis, the changes in t...
متن کاملOccipitoparietal alpha-band responses to the graded allocation of top-down spatial attention.
The voluntary, top-down allocation of visual spatial attention has been linked to changes in the alpha-band of the electroencephalogram (EEG) signal measured over occipital and parietal lobes. In the present study, we investigated how occipitoparietal alpha-band activity changes when people allocate their attentional resources in a graded fashion across the visual field. We asked participants t...
متن کاملTop-down flow of visual spatial attention signals from parietal to occipital cortex.
Given the complexity of our visual environment, the ability to selectively attend to certain locations, while ignoring others, is crucial for reducing the amount of visual information to manageable levels and for optimizing behavioral performance. Sustained allocation of spatial attention causes persistent increases in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) signals in portions of early vi...
متن کاملReduced prefrontal hemodynamic response in adult attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder as measured by near-infrared spectroscopy.
AIM Recent developments in near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) have enabled non-invasive clarification of brain functions in psychiatric disorders. In pediatric attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), reduced prefrontal hemodynamic responses have been observed with NIRS repeatedly. However, there are few studies of adult ADHD by multi-channel NIRS. Therefore, in this study, we used multi...
متن کاملFunctional MRI mapping of visual function and selective attention for performance assessment and presurgical planning using conjunctive visual search
BACKGROUND Accurate mapping of visual function and selective attention using fMRI is important in the study of human performance as well as in presurgical treatment planning of lesions in or near visual centers of the brain. Conjunctive visual search (CVS) is a useful tool for mapping visual function during fMRI because of its greater activation extent compared with high-capacity parallel searc...
